About The Article : Me and the Ecology Bit’s is a featurised aw article written by Joan Lexau on the issue of preserving ecological balance. Maintaining ecological balance is major problem being faced by the modern world today. Man is after making material progress at the cost of our environment. We are cutting the branch of the tree on which we are sitting. This problem is very sensitive but different to solve. The winter feels that preaching about ecology is easy but when it comes to following the rules , we deny and fail.
The article has been written in dialogue from to explain the problem. There are 32 small paragraph through which the Writer has tried the problem and has given suggestion on that people can understand their role in solving this calamity of modern world.

Summary In English :  The writer says that it difficult to persuade people to work for ecology. The writer feels that everybody is in favour of it but nobody wants to do anything about it. He goes to people and them as to what they should do. But the result he gets is not very satisfying.
The writer got some plan paper through his father bro work on this but he hardly gets ime to work on it because he has a lot of home work.
He finds out time on Saturday
to work ecology . Last Saturday he met some person who were outside in good spring weather.
The Mr. William’s house first. He pretended he was not at home but ” was seen burning leaves in the background. He was told not to burn those leaves as they make good compost . Burning of leaves pollute air and destroys ecology.
He does not agree and says that this compost work is your baby. You should put more soil on top so that we are not faced with ‘ nose pollution’. He said your compost emits foul smell and It becomes difficult to walk on street.
From the house of Mr. Williams the writer proceeds towards the house of Ms. Greene. She was putting her grabage bag is to be looked after by the writer for two days. She asks him to pick up the gum wrapper from the lown left by him [ the  writer ]. She complains about the litter.
The writer feels hurt on her accusations but holds his temper. He picked up the gambag and puts that inside the garbage bag. Then Mrs. Greene complains about his dog who had dug up her garden. She said as per municipal law prevelent, one should keep their dogs in chain.
Then the author saw Mrs. Greene piling newspapers near her garbage bag. The author advised her to save those old newspapers to be collected by school as those can be recycled into new paper. He also told her to save aluminium cans too.
She complained that on this advice she had collected all those papers for school pick up but you never turned up. It is easier to throw them than to make a big piling mess.
The author got tired of Mrs. Green and decided to proceed to Mr. Johnson house.
Mr. Johnson was found of driving into a car. Even for a short distance, he will use his car instead of working . He told the post office is just two blocks away and it would be a good exercise if the distance is covered on fast and at the same time one can save precious bud. In that way one can help in maintaining ecology and not pollute the air.
Mr. Johnson got annoyed on his unwanted advice. He complained that you talk about not driving and you yourself drive your motorbike round and round in the backyard all the summer. Is that not wasting fuel power and causing noise pollution. The author tried to escape by saying. It was a fun only.
Mr. Johnson replied. I too enjoy driving my car. But now I am too late and would not go to the poet Office today, he said. He got annoyed and walked to his house. He died not pay his contribution. The author decided to wait till next Saturday. At least he had the satisfaction of stopping Mr. Johnson by not polluting the air by not using his car at least once.
The author says that he decided at his point not to proceed further on this route. He felt that it is so boring a job to make somebody understand the importance of ecology.
He got back horn and found mother using electric mixer. He told his mother to save electricity by using the old egg beater. That will save electricity.
Mother said but you watch T.V. twenty- seven hours a day. Are you using some other kind of electricity ?
The author finds himself in soup and tries to Pacify the situation by saying. Nobody is willing to do anything about ecology expect me. And again nobody listens to me.

पाठ  का  सारांश
लेखक कहता है कि पर्यावरण विज्ञान से संबंधित कार्य करने के लिये लोगों को प्रेरित करना अत्यंत कठिन है। लेखक का मत है कि सभी लोग पर्यावरण संतुलन की आवश्यकता अनुभव तो करते हैं पर जब कुछ करने की बारी आती है तो इसके प्रति उदासीन दिखते हैं। लेखक घर – घर जाकर लोगों से मिलता है और उन्हें अलग-अलग समस्याओं पर काम करने की सलाह देता है पर उनकी प्रतिक्रिया संतोषजनक या उत्साहवर्धक नहीं दिखायी देती है।
अपने मार्ग दर्शन हेतु लेखक को एक प्लाॅनचार्ट उपलब्ध हो जाता है जिसके आधार पर उसके पिता अपने बचपन में इस पर कार्य करते थे। यद्यपि लेखक को वातावरण के संरक्षण हेतु विशेष कार्य करने के लिए समय निकाल पाना कठिन होता है । शनिवार के दिन का उपयोग वह इस कार्य के लिए करता है। पास – पड़ोस के लोग शनिवार के सप्ताहांत की छुट्टी के कारण घर पर मिल जातें हैं। कभी-कभी तो लोग बसंत के सुखदायक मौसम का आनंद लेते अपने घर के बाहर ही दिखाई पड़ जाते हैं।
लेखक सबसे पहले मि. विलियम्स के घर जाते है। मि. विलियम्स ने लेखक को देखकर भी अनदेखा किया लेकिन वह अपने बगीचे में पत्ते जलाते दिख गया। लेखक ने मि. विलियम को कहा कि पत्तों से अच्छा कम्पोस्ट खाद तैयार होता है अतः उसे जलाना ठिक नहीं है। पत्तों को जलाने से पर्यावरण प्रदुषित होता है।
मि. विलियम लेखक की बात से सहमत नहीं होते हैं कि कम्पोष्ट बताना आपका धंधा है। कम्पोष्ट बनाते समय ऊपरी सतह पर ज्यादा मिट्टी डालनी चाहिए ताकि सड़ांध से निकल दुर्गन्ध नाकों को नष्ट न दे। उनकी दुर्गन्ध से लोगों को सड़क पर निकलना कठिन हो जाता है।
मि. विलियम के घर से निकलकर लेखक सुश्री ग्रीन के घर की ओर बढ़ता है। सुश्री ग्रीन सप्ताह के अंत में छुट्टियाँ बिताने चली जाती हैं अतः दो दिनों तक इस कूड़े के थैले की रखवाली उसे करनी पड़ती है। सुश्री ग्रीन उनके द्वारा कागज के टुकड़े इधर- इधर बिखड़ाने की चर्चा करती हैं। लेखक को उनके इस आरोप पर कष्ट होता है पर वह चुप रहना ही श्रेयस्कर समझता है। फिर सुश्री ग्रीन को लेखक के ‘ डौगी ‘ के बारे में शिकायत है। सुश्री ग्रीन के अनुसार नगरपालिका के कानून के अनुसार घर के पालतू कुत्ते को चेन में बाँधकर रखना चाहिए।
इस बीच लेखक सुश्री ग्रीन को कूड़े के बैग के पास पुराने अखबारों को इकट्ठा करते देखता है। लेखक सुश्री ग्रीन को अखबारों को इस प्रकार फेंकने से मना करता है। और कहता है कि इसे सुरक्षित रख दें। स्कूल वाले इसे कागज बनाने के लिए ले जाएँगे। पिछली बार भी उन्होंने इकठ्ठा कर रखा था पर अन्तत: इसे फेंकना पड़ा क्योंकि स्कूल द्वारा इन्हें ले जाने का कष्ट नहीं उठाया गया।
मि. जाॅनसन को गाड़ी की सवारी अच्छी लगती थी। थोड़ी दूर जाने के लिए भी वे गाड़ी का इस्तेमाल करते थे। पैदल चलना उन्हें पसंद नहीं था लेखक को देखते ही उन्होंने कहा कि वे पोस्ट आॅफिस तुरंत पहुँचना चाहते हैं ताकि उसके बंद होने के पहले वहाँ पहुँच जाए। लेखक ने कहा कि पोस्ट आॅफिस तो बस कुछ ही कदम पर है और पैदल जाने से एक तो शारीरिक श्रम होगा और फिर बहुमूल्य ईंधन की बचत होगी।
मि. जाॅनसन को लेखक की यह अचायित सलाह अच्छी नहीं लगी । आप गाड़ी नहीं चलाने की सलाह तो देते हो, पर स्वयं अपनी बाइक दिन – रात चलाते हो। पिछली गर्मी के दिनों में तुमने इसका खुलकर इस्तेमाल किया। वह क्या ईंधन का दुरूपयोग नहीं था ? साथ ही ध्वनी प्रदूषण  द्वारा भी वातावरण प्रभावित हुआ।
लेखक यह कहकर निकलना चाहा कि— वह तो मात्र एक खेल था। मि. जानसन ने उत्तर दिया मुझे भी गाड़ी चलाना अच्छा लगता है पर चूँकि आज अब बहुत देर हो चुकी है अतः वह आज पोस्ट आॅफिस नहीं जायेगा। उसने लेखक को चंदा भी नहीं दिया — लेखक ने अब अगले शनिवार तक प्रतीक्षा करना उचित समझा। उसे कम से कम यह आत्म – संतोष हो रहा था कि उसने मि. जाॅनसन को कम से कम एक बार गाड़ी चलाने से रोक लिया जिसे पर्यावरण प्रदूषित होने से आंशिक रूप से बच गया।
यह सोचता – सोचता वह घर वापस आया। घर में आकर उसने  देखा कि उसकी  माँ  ‘ इलेक्ट्रिक मिक्सर ‘ चला रही हैं। उसने माँ को बिजली बचाने की सलाह दी और कहा कि इतना काम तो पुराने ‘ अण्डा बीट ‘ करने वाली मशीन से हो जाता । इसमें बिजली की खपत भी नहीं होती है। माँ को यह सलाह अच्छी नहीं लगी । उसने कहा कि और तुम जो 27घंटे तक टी. वी. देखते रहते हो, वह क्या किसी प्रकार की बिजली से संचालित होता है ?
लेखक को अपनी गलती का भान हो गया। उसने स्थिती को संभालते हुये कहा कि ” मेरे सिवा कोई भी व्यक्ति पर्यावरण संरक्षण में रूचि नहीं रखता और फिर मेरी बात भी कोई नहीं सुनता ।”

Ans. This is pit where compost manure is made.

Ans. Actually when leaves, garbage and other stuff are dumped in a pit it stars decomposing which emits foul smell. Mr. Williams uses the phrase nose pollution to explain regarding the emission of foul smell from the pit after decomposition of the material dumped inside the pit.
Q.3. Why is burning of leaves bad for air ?
Ans. The burning of leaves creates smoke. The smoke is full of carbon which is acidic. This pollutes the air and thereby pollutes the atmosphere.

Q.1. ‘ Nobody is willing to do anything about ecology’. Do you agree with the statement.
Ans. Yes, I feel we are left with no choice but to agree with the statement of the narrator at the end of the article entitled ‘ Me and the Ecology Bit’. The narrator tried his best to convince people to do something on their part for the sake of ecology but instead of agreeing to the suggestion everyone started accusing the writer by finding faults in his own approach towards maintaining ecological balance. If we generalize this statement in the context of the world scan ario of today the situation is found to be almost the same.
Q.2. ” But any how on Saturday when I collect, I put in a word on ecology.” This is the narrator’s way of preserving ecology. How are you contributing to ecolgical preservation in your sorrounding ?
Ans. This is the common way of doing social work in modern society. Everybody preaches others to follow the rule but when it comes to himself he flouts the rule.
We try to keep our area neat and elean, throw the garbage at the proper place and do community plantation of trees in the area to preserve the ecological balance.
Q.3. ‘ I get tired of trying to get Mrs. Green to do something about ecology. Explain in detail the meeting between Jim and Mrs. Greene and throw light on the outcome of the meeting.
Ans. The diologue between Jim and Mrs. Green seems to be quite interesting. When Jim reached her house she was putting her garbage bag for weekly pick up on Monday. She is usually goes out on weekends and so she keeps the garbage in a beg plastic bag and keeps that bag in her garden for further management by the writer.
She asks Jim to pick up gum wrapper which she says was thrown by Jim. She says —’ Has he not been taught not to bitter. And then again she complains about Jim’s dog who is responsible for digging up his garden and putting her yard in a mess. She says the dogs are to kept in chains.
Then the third episode between Mrs. Greene and Jim related to the management of old newspapers. She was advised by Jim to save those papers to be picked up the school. She was also told to keep aluminium cans.
The meeting results in a fiascos and the effort of Jim failed.
Q.4. ‘ Sure it is hard to get people to work for ecology’. Do you agree with this statement? What is Ecology? What measures have you and your school taken to preserve it ?
Ans. Ecology is the science for the preservation of natural atmosphere and environment so that the life of living being on earth is not endangered. As it goes the people have started appreciating the problem being faced by the modern world but nobody is coming out to work for it seriously hence the situation has not improved.
Q.5. ” When use too many electric things”. What prompts the narrator to say so? How does the use of modern appliances affect ecology ?
Ans. In modern kitchens in the house there are so many electric appliance to facilitate cooking. The cooking methods have undergone a change from the traditional way making it necessary to use modern appliances like electric women, mixer. Juicer, Grinder, Toaster , Exhaust Fans, Refrigerator, Cooker etc. These appliances used electricity to run. This results in more consumption of electricity which is short in supply because the production is less. This causes pressure on production. We need more coal for production of thermal power or more water for Hydro power. Both coal Hydro power generation effects our ecological balance in turns of pollution of atmosphere. So the narrator advised his mother to use hand driven egg beater instead of electric mixer.
Q.6. Do you think that Jim is a real ecology friendly boy ? Give your own opinion.
Ans. Jim is more a preacher who gives sermon to others to work for the preservation of ecology. But when it comes to his own working, he has not shown any effective result. So it seems he is more perfect in theory then in practice.
Q.7. Does Jim understand why his advice is being questioned? Explain.
Ans. His advice regarding following the principal of ecological methods are ignored bacause people understand that Jim is not a true follower of what he says. So that people make a mockery of Jim . Perhaps be understands has position and that is why he is unable to insist on the subject.
Q.8. What happened to the tree referred to by Mr. Johnson ?
Ans. Actually the Referred to by Mr. Johnson was non existent. There was no tree there. At another place a little tree was coming up but was killed due to jumping over it everyday Alle – gedly by Jim.
So the theory of tree and ecology as put by Jim to Jonson was proved wrong. It made another laughing stock for Jim.
Q.9. Is Jim awere of all the a spects and does he always practice ecology methods ? Why or why not ?
Ans. From the lesson it is apparent that Jim is very much aware of all the aspects of ecology but it seems that he does bring those methods to his own use. He gets defeat at all the places where he goes and at the end be admits that nobody listens to him.

(a) What are modern appliances? They are electrical fittings in the house like air conditioner, Room cooler, Room Heater , Blower, Refrigerator in which Gas are used to produce cooling effect. The T.V. Radio , The Mixer Grinder.
(b) If we come out of our houses we are faced with running cars, trucks, Buses and other heavy vehicle the rail transport system , the air travel system.
(c) Your mobile and other equipments connected with the operation of mobile service
(d) The computer and computer based communication services.
The benifits of these appliances and that of big factories and workshop and their adverse effects may be analysed in the discussion in detail.
C.3. Composition :
1. Prepare a speech in 100 wards to be delivered in the morning assembly of the school on ‘ How students can become ecology friendly.
Respected teacher, and my brothers and sisters present here in the assembly. Today I want to talk to you regarding a very important subject which is drawing atten of the people and nation of the world. The subject is related with ecology. You know as the world is mankind is increasing day by day.
The greatest problem before the world today is that of increasing population . The number of boys and girls taking birth everyday is adding to population growth. Our lands are limited and the resources at our disposal are limited so man is required to put extra effort to feed the additional men and women. This is putting pressure son the resources that we have with us and this is creating a lot of problem including the problem of ecological imbalance. The tree are cut to create more cultivable land, the natural water resources are getting scarce and the air is getting polluted due to coming up of more factories etc.
Friends since very beginning we have to be careful. As coming generation of the modern world, we the youth have to take care to guard ourselves against the vices of pollution. We have to be ecology friendly and persuade others too to act according to the demand of the environment and nature.

Dear Rakesh,
Hope this will find you in good health and cheerful. I wanted to inform you about the efforts our school outside the city area and there are cluster of village situated nearby. We have formed two ways for Ecological making green manure [ compost ] and use only the compost in their field instead of chemical fertilizers.
The farmers of the village are very happy about this. Most of the farmers have now taken up to produce and use only compost in their fields. The yield has gone up and at the same time they are saving money in buying chemical fertilizers from the market. Moreover they are also being persuade to plant more and tree in and around their village. This will help to improve the atmosphere. They will also get furit, timbor from the trees and the dry leaves can be used in making compost.

E. Grammar: Active voice and Passive Voice.
Ex.1. Read carefully the Sentences taken from the lesson.
He pays me and I tell him.
You see that the sentence given above consists of two clause : ‘ He pays me’ and ‘ I tell him’. In the first part, the subject is he ‘ and ‘he’ is also the ‘ doer’ whereas ‘me’ is the receiver and so the object of this clause. In the second clause— ‘I’ is the ‘ doer’ as well as ‘ subject’ of the clause whereas ‘ him’ is the object and the receiver. Both these clauses, therefore , are in the Active voice. Their Passive equivalents are as follows :

I am paid by him and he is told by me.
You see that in the passive equivalent the subject ” I ” and ‘he’, the subjects of the first and the second clause respectively are, in fact, the receivers, not the doers. Note carefully the changes that have taken place in the passive equivalent :
The objects of the Active — ‘me’
And ‘him’— have become the subject of the passive.
The objects of the ‘pays’ and ‘tell’ have been changed into ‘ampaid’ and  ‘is told’ respectively. The choice of ‘ is’, ‘ am ‘ or for that matter any aux. Verb depends on the person of the new subject ( which was the object in the active voice) and the tense of the verb phrase ( in the sentence).
3. Also note the case of the pronounchanges when their position changes; i.e. ‘he’ when used as subject and ‘him’ when used as object. Similarly, ‘I’ when used as subject and ‘me’ when used as object.
4. Aux. Verbs ‘is’ and ‘am’ have been inserted in the passive equivalent because an appropriate from of ‘be’ is used with the subject in the passive if the Active is in the simple present on it simple Past.
5. Whatever the tense, the verb in the passive voice is in the Past participle form (V3).
6. Normally Preposition be is used before the agent in the passive voice.

Exmp.2. Change the following sentence in Active voice into the passive voice.

F. Activities :
Q.1. Do a project work on how to prepare compost.
Ans. To prepare compost [ organic manure = जैविक खाद ] one has to first prepare a compost pit. The pit should preferably be prepared at a place which is shaded and should be placed in the corner of the garden. The pit should be dug for a  depth of one metre. The pit should have the limiting of the garden. The pit should be dug for a depth of one metre. The pit should have the lining of bricksor granite. After the pit is ready all the organic matter mostly refuse of the kitchen and garden should be spared in the pit properly. All these materials should be covered with a layer of dried leaves or with a thin layer of soil. This will help in preventing foul odour emanating from the pit to spread in the atmosphere
If more manure is needed similar processing should be done to make Compost.
Q.2. Find out what other fertilizers are being used for growing plants ? Which out of them are good for plants as well as human beings and which are bad ? Write a report.
Ans. For the proper growth of plants use of manure is essential. Manures are derived through two main sources. Number is natural manure which are obtained from Human excreta like urine, stool etc. Similarly green manure are made through the method of Compost. Again the cowdung and urine of the cattle can be converted into a rich mannure.
